Sir James Emerson Tennent was born in Belfast, Ireland. He attended Trinity College, Dublin. In January of 1831 he was called to the bar. In June of that year he married Letitia Tennent, daughter of William Tennent, a wealthy banker. James assumed Tennent last name in addition to his own in 1832. He was elected to the House of Commons in December 1832. He held the office of secretary to the India board from September 8, 1841 to August 5, 1843. He was knighted in 1845. From 1845 to 1850 he was civil secretary to the colonial government of Ceylon. When he retired in 1867 he was created a baronet. He also published literature, including "Ceylon: An Account of the Island, Physical, Historical, and Topographical," and "Sketches of the Natural History of Ceylon." He died March 6, 1869.
