Edward Ellice

Biography
Edward Ellice was the son of Alexander and Anne Ellice. He was nicknamed "The Bear" for his financial achievements. His father had a successful fur trading company that Edward began working at as a clerk. After his father's death in 1805, he assumed control of the estate and commercial empire. He became a prominent merchant-banker and was successful in trading furs, sugar, cotton and other merchandise. After many fur companies merged, Ellice became a director of the Hudson's Bay Company. Along with his in the market, he was also a successful absentee landlord. In 1809 he married Lady Hannah Bettesworth. After her death, he married Lady Anne Amelia Leicester.
