Biography
John Blackwood was the sixth son of William Blackwood, founder of the English Magazine "Blackwood's Magazine." After his father and brother's died, John took over as editor of the magazine. John attended the University of Edinburgh. In 1839, he learned the publishing business at the house of a London publishing firm. In 1840, he took over a branch of the magazine, procuring recruitments for the magazine. In 1845, he became editor for the magazine, and in 1852 he became head of the publishing business. He recognized the genius of George Eliot, and printed many of her works.
