Biography
Edward George Geoffrey Smith Stanley was the son of Edward Smith Stanley, thirteenth earl of Derby, and father of Edward Henry Stanley, Lord Stanley and later fifteenth earl of Derby. Edward George Geoffrey Smith Stanley served as fourteenth earl of Derby in 1851. From 1830-33, he served as under-secretary for the colonies. From 1855-58, he attacked the foreign policy of the Palmerston ministry. In 1864, he prevented English intervention in the German-Danish war. In 1870, the Derby scholarship was founded to commemorate him.
