Biography

Dr. James C. Welling married Clementine Louise Welling nee Dixon, daughter of senator James Dixon, as his second wife. They had 2 children together, William Corcoran Welling and Elizabeth Dixon Welling. His first wife was Genevieve Garnett, who died in 1852. He had one child with Garnett, Genevieve Welling.
He was a learned man, graduating from Princeton. He served as a professor, President of Columbian college (university), as an editor of the "National Intelligencer," and as a regent of the Smithsonian, among other accomplishments. He was honored with an LL.D. later in life.
