Born in England 1810, James Hurst immigrated to Canada and then Utica, NY. Eventually Hurst settled in Albany, NY and worked for the Cabinet of Natural History. He opened a private taxidermy visit and was appointed the first New York State taxidermist. Hurst is likely mentioned in an October 17, 1856 letter from Willie Seward to his father.
