Biography

In a letter to Frances Miller Seward dated January 27, 1856, Clarinda Miller McClallen mentioned the fire at the "Auburn House" and speculation that "Smith" had set the fire. Immediately following the discussion of the fire, Clarinda added "poor woman I felt very sorry for her she lost one child the week before the fire and an other the week after." Clarinda was likely referring to Smith's wife.

On January 23, 1856, the Auburn Weekly American reported that the Auburn House "was occupied at the time by Z. M. Smith and used as a Ladies Seminary." Zoeth M. Smith is listed as a teacher at a female seminary in the 1855 New York Census, and Hannah Smith is listed as his wife. The couple had 4 children listed in the 1855 New York Census, and their oldest, Seraph, was listed in an 1870 U.S. Census, leaving the two children who died to be Sarah, Ellen, or Carrie.
