He, along with Daniel D. T. Charles, founded Van Heusen, Charles & Co, a business in Albany that dealt with fine china, glass, earthen ware, kerosene goods, gas fixtures and more. In 1863, he married Miss Arabella J. Manning of Jamaica Plain, Mass. They had four sons, William Manning Van Heusen, Charles Manning Van Heusen, Richard Fletcher Van Heusen and John Manning Van Heusen.
