Biography

Sarah Waldegrave was born Sarah Whitear in 1787, the daughter of Reverend William Whitear. She first married Edward Milward, an esquire and Mayor of Hastings. After his death, she married William Waldegrave. She was a philanthropic woman, founding many Sunday schools, poor schools, and institutions. She was also involved in the Hastings Literary and Scientific Institution. There is a drinking fountain dedicated to her honor outside Holy Trinity Church in Hastings.
