Biography

Sir Charles Cooper was born in England. He was called to the bar in 1827, and became a judge in South Australia in 1838. He helped to draft bills and mould South Australian law. In 1853, he married Emily Grace. In 1856, he was appointed the first Chief Justice of South Australia. In 1858 he was knighted in England and joined the Executive Council. In 1861, he resigned from the bench, and in 1862, from the Executive Council. He lived in retirement in England until his 1887 death.
