Biography

Mario was born in Lendinara and came to support Italian independence, aligning himself with Giuseppe Mazzini in 1848. He was the husband of Jessie Jane Mario, an Italian independence sympathizer and philanthropist. Mario appears in a letter from Frances to Lazette (18590217FMS_LMW), where she records a meeting between William Henry Seward and Jessie Jane Mario: "Madame Mario  was here last night to see Henry—wishes him  to say something in favor of Italian Liberty at her next lecture –He declined and I left them  in a very animated argument on the subject—She is not especially proposing in her appearance but seems very earnest in her work—Her husband  was  with her – he does not speak English–they both look  young—are recently married."
