Biography
Maria Eliza Elvendorf Schoolcraft was born in Guiderland, N.Y. She was the sister of John Lawrence Schoolcraft and Henry Rowe Schoolcraft. She moved with her mother and new husband to Detroit when she was a child. In 1827 or 1828 she married John Hurlbut. They had the following children: Edwin James, Eliza B., John Jr., Henry Schoolcraft, Jane Stuart, William Lawrence, and Maria.
