Biography

He was a son of Sanford and Ruth Mapes, and he was born in the same house as William Henry Seward. He grew up in Orange County and attended the Seward Institute. His family was mostly democratic, and he broke ranks to become a Republican. In 1861, he married Evelyn (or Eveline) Randall and they had 4 children together. In 1877, he and his wife moved to Nebraska where he resided until his death. He was elected as a country judge in Nebraska for several terms.
