Biography
Mother of Anne Eliza Stell, wife of a Philadelphia merchant who moved to England. The Stells hosted William Seward on an 1859 visit, which he described to his daughter Fanny in a letter written July 11, 1859. "Mr Stell is a retired American merchant, Mrs Stell is of Baltimore and her mother, an adopted child of ten and a bright intellectual family relation of Baltimore make up the party. I apprehended that slavery prejudices might operate against me, but I find the tone of this family like that of every other friend in England more intolerant of slavery than even my own [illegible] connections.
