Biography

Thomas Osler trained as a chemist in London in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth-centuries, working as a manufacturer in London. While living and working in Birmingham, Osler took a chance by partnering with William Shakespear, beginning their own glass company--Shapespear and Osler--in 1807. Here, Osler and Shakespear "manufactured glass toys, "glass drops, and spangles mainly for export to India and America." By 1811, Thomas's son, Follett Abraham Osler, joined "the family business after attending the Hazelwood School near Birmingham." William Henry Seward toured Osler's glass factory while on his European tour on June 30th, 1859.
