Sergeant Bates became a popular figure in post-Antebellum 1868 when he walked unscathed through the South carrying an American flag, in order to prove that the South was loyal to the Union. He ended his march in Washington D.C. LMW mentions his march in the letter, saying that AWS, who was in Washington D.C. at the time, told her of it.
