Biography
Elizabeth Keckley was mentioned in the letter 1868LMW_AHS1v1, shortly after her book "Behind the Scenes" was published. In the letter, LMW writes that she would like to read the book, and mentions that she had AWS send for it. Keckley was born into slavery and eventually became a talented seamstress and was able to buy her freedom. She then became Mrs. Lincoln's personal modiste, and was very fashionable among Washington society. Her tell-all book was highly criticized for not sparing intimate details about Mrs. Lincoln's life.
