Biography

Captain John McClure was originally from Ohio, but spent time in New York City and New Orleans as a journalist, businessman, and eventual, Quartermaster in the Union Army. He was part of the Gulf Volunteer Force and served in the occupied city of New Orleans. After the conclusion of the Civil War, McClure was promoted to Colonel and accepted a position as U.S. consul to France "from 1867 through the early 1870s." His relations include his "sister Belle and brother David." While in New Orleans, McClure was in correspondence with Secretary of War, Edwin M. Stanton and Secretary of State William Henry Seward. He is referenced in a letter from Fanny Seward, William Henry Seward's daughter, to her brother, William Jr.  McClure was in the company of Judge Peabody, Baron Gerolt, and Mr. Rosing (18660119FAS_WSJ).
