Biography

Hance served in the U.S. army during the Civil War, being promoted to full captain on November 23, 1861. He was also considered to be a personal friend of Abraham Lincoln. Hance later served as a U.S. consul in Kingston, Canada. He was then elected Chief of Police in Kingston in 1874, despite the opposition that he faced because he was American.
