Biography

Italian poet best known as the author of the romance epic Orlando Furioso (1516). The poem, a continuation of Matteo Maria Boiardo's Orlando Innamorato, describes the adventures of Charlemagne, Orlando, and the Franks as they battle against the Saracens with diversions into many sideplots. Mentioned by William Seward in a letter to his daughter Fanny, October 29, 1859, while visiting Verona, in reference to part of the story of Orlando (Roland) and Oliviero portrayed in a chapel there.
