Biography

Maria Christina was born a Duchess of Austria in 1742. She was the daughter of Maria Theresa of Austria and Francis I, Roman Emperor. In 1766 she married Prince Albert of Saxony and became the Duchess of Teschen. She governed the Austrian Netherland from 1780-1789. She died June 24, 1798, of typhus. After her death her husband commissioned Antonio Canova to create a memorial in her honor. Her funerary memorial is considered one of the most elaborate and well-known memorials in Austria.
