Biography

Childe Harold is the fictional character of Lord Byron's narrative poem, "Childe Harold's Pilgrimage," which he wrote at the beginning of the 19th century. The poem covers Harold's travels in cantos, and the fourth canto is about Italy. It is this fourth section that William Henry Seward quotes in his August 16, 1859 letter from Rome.
