Richmond Legh Jones was the son of Jehu Glancy Jones and Anna Jones. In 1870, he married Margaret Ellen McCarthy Jones, they had one daughter, Anna Rodman. Richmond spent several years in Europe with his father. He also studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1863. He served as counsel for the United Power and Transportation Company and Interstate Railways Company. During the Civil War, he served as captain of a company of Pennsylvania Volunteers. In 1866 he was elected a member of the State Legislature.
