John Baring was a German immigrant to England and married Elizabeth Vowler. They established a cloth factory and prospered. His son Sir Francis Baring founded "John & Francis Baring & Company" which became known as "Baring Brothers and Company." In his letter dated June 21, 1859, William Henry Seward directs his wife Frances Miller Seward to "address always 'Care of Barring Brothers and Company, London.'"
