Best known as Pliny the Elder, Gaius Plinius Secundus was a Roman scholar well-known for his work "Natural History." This work was considered scientific authority until the medieval ages. He is the biological uncle of Pliny the Younger.

On August 22, 1859, William Henry Seward referenced Pliny's complimentary description of a mosaic, "The Capitoline Doves."
