Biography

Adolphe Pierre Aloïs de Vrière (Bruges, April 9, 1806 - Laken, July 16, 1885 ) was a Belgian liberal representative and minister.

In 1830 de Vrière was a supporter of the Belgian Revolution and in October 1830 he became district commissioner for Bruges. The following year, however, he opted for a diplomatic career. He became legation secretary in Saxony and Prussia (1831), charge d'affaires in Copenhagen (1841), and in Lisbon (1845), minister-resident in Lisbon (1847).

The homogeneously liberal Rogier II government appointed him governor of Namur in November 1847 , governor of Hainaut in September 1848 and governor of West Flanders in April 1849 , a post he held until his election as representative of the people at the end of 1857.

On November 9, 1857, de Vrière became Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Rogier III government, sometimes referred to as the first Frère-Orban government . He resigned in October 1861, disagreeing with the recognition of the Kingdom of Italy. He regarded this recognition as an attack on the Papal State and as a violation of Belgian neutrality. Adolphe de Vrière was appointed Minister of State on that occasion.

In 1857 he was elected representative of the people, which he remained until 1870. After 1870 he no longer held any public office. He remained active in the business world, as commissioner of the Société de chemins de fer Bruxelles-Lille-Calais and as manager of Banque des travaux publics and the Charbonnages de Peronnes.
