Biography

Joseph Speed Conrad was a career military man from New York state. He graduated from West Point in 1857 and quickly rose in rank. By 1864, when Conrad is mentioned in William Henry Seward, Jr.'s letter to his brother Frederick William Seward, he had been mustered out of the Volunteers and began to serve as Assistant Adjudant General of the Army of the Potomac's 1st Brigade, 1st Division, V Corps.

Joseph Speed Conrad should not be confused with a different military general Brevet Brigadier General Joseph Conrad, a German-born Union Officer.
