John Cumming Howell is referenced by Fanny Adeline Seward in her 1862-1863 diary as the captain of the Lehigh, which she visits with her father William Henry Seward. Howell joined the Navy in 1836 and his service ended with retirement in 1881. His highest rank was Rear Admiral.
