Biography

John Bankhead Magruder was an officer in the United States Army, who later joined the Confederate States Army. He fought in the Mexican-American War, but resigned his Army post in April 1861 after his home state of Virginia seceded. He fought in the Civil War before being reassigned to the command of the District of Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. He fled to Mexico after the war ended, and later died in Gavelston, Texas.
