Henry Hale Graham Sharpless was born to Townsend and Mary (Jones) Sharpless' Quaker family in Philadelphia. He married Mary Lyman Van Buren in 1855. He may be the "Mssr. Sharpless" that Fanny Adeline Seward references in her 1862-1863 diary as a "young gentleman, to tea."
