Biography

Senator James Grimes represented Iowa as a Republican in the United States Congress from 1859-1869. He was one of several members of congress that heard Senator Crittendon's proposal in special committee, an attempt to keep the peace on the eve of the Civil War. His opposition was contrary to William Henry Seward. Grimes later led several presentations and ultimately a vote that called for Seward to resign as Secretary of State. Grimes is mentioned in Fanny Adeline Seward's 1862-1863 diary.
