Biography

 New Hampshire legislator from 1831-1833, named U.S. Commissioner of Public Buildings in Washington, D.C in 1853. Oversaw public events of both the Gettysburg Address and the funeral of Abraham Lincoln. Disgraced by Republicans after the Civil War for his allegiance to President Johnson. Spent the remainder of his career as minor clerk in U.S. Treasury Dept. Referenced in Fanny Seward's 1862-1863 diary as being absent at one of Lincoln's receptions. French usually introduced people to Lincoln in the White House.
