Son of Stephen and Mary Pleasonton, graduate of West Point and veteran of Mexican-American War, promoted to Brigadier General in July 1862 and in June 1863 to Major General of Cavalry Corps by General Hooker. Brother of Laura and Clementina Pleasonton who are referenced in Fanny Seward's 1862-1863 diary.
