Biography

Daughter of Washington, D.C. patent lawyer, Charles Mason, Mary was born in Iowa, but spent much of her young adult life in Washington, D.C. Her father was a conservative Democrat and she later described herself and her mother as "southern sympathizers." In D.C., she attended school and the Episcopal Church of the Ascension. Married Admiral George Collier Remey in 1873. Fanny Seward may reference her in her 1862-1863 diary as "Miss Mason - of the celebrated neck - she is not very pretty otherwise, and wears her dresses too low."
