Biography

American Revolutionary Officer under General George Washington. His treason against the United States is attributed to his dissatisfaction in not being promoted within military leadership. Arnold's role as a traitor was discovered in 1780 and he escaped to the protection of the British, whom he served for the remainder of the war. Arnold died in London in 1801 and his name continues to be synonymous with betrayal and deception. Fanny Seward references him in her 1862-1863 diary when viewing state relics in the State Department offices in Washington, D.C., including letters by Arnold.
