Biography

Union General during American Civil War. Born in Ballston Spa, NY, worked as a civil engineer until he entered West Point in 1838. Served during the Mexican-American War. During the Civil War, he served under General Patterson and in 1863 was made Brigadier General while given the command to protect the city of Washington, D.C. Fanny Seward references him in her 1862-1863 diary where she finds him at a reception of Mrs. Lincoln.
