Biography

Daniel Breed was a trained physician and a U.S. patent examiner and attorney within the chemistry division in Washington, D.C. During the American Civil War and afterwards, he was influential in the founding of the National Colored Home and the Freedman's Hospital. Born in New Hampshire, Breed was a Quaker and married Gulielma Bowne. Fanny Seward references in her 1862-1863 diary that Miss Emily Howland was boarding with Dr. Breed in Washington, D.C.
