Daughter of James Melville Gilliss and Rebecca S. Roberts Gilliss. James M. Gilliss was an astronomer and the Superintendent of the U.S. Naval Observatory during the American Civil War. Fannie is possibly referenced in Fanny Seward's 1862-1863 diary as a guest during the Seward's weekly reception day in Washington, D.C.  in the company of "Miss Brooks".
