Kentucky native, trained in law. During the American Civil War, he became Brigadier General of Volunteers from November 1861 to January 1865. Fanny Seward references him in her 1862-1863 diary as visiting the Seward home in Washington, D.C. in the company of Thomas Treadwell Davis of Syracuse.
