West Point Graduate (Class of 1847). Served as instructor at West Point until start of Civil War in 1861. Promoted to Brigadier General of Volunteers in 1862, participated in both Bull Run and Antietam. Fanny Seward references him and his wife in her 1862-1863 diary in attendance at a party at Mr. Lisboa's, the Brazilian Minister.
