Biography

Born in London, England. His father Richard Rush was a U.S. minister to the Court of Saint James. Graduated from West Point in 1846. During the American Civil War, he was appointed to the Sixth Pennsylvania Cavalry, which became known famously as "Rush's Lancers." Fanny Seward references "Rush's Lancers" in her 1862-1863 diary when relating that Major Gerrard Irvine Whitehead was formerly one of their number.
