Biography

Born in Virginia, studied law, but pursued journalism because of failing health. Served the remainder of William O. Goode's U.S. congressional term from 1859-1861. Served in the Confederate Army at the start of the U.S. Civil War, then elected as a member of the Confederate House of Representatives. After the war, he moved to New York City where he practiced law and was eventually appointed a justice of the New York Supreme Court. Frances "Fanny" Seward references him in her 1860 pocket diary in relation to a sermon she heard in Washington, D.C. that condemned his involvement with John Fox Potter in an aborted duel in 1860.
