Emma Swartout was born Emma Caroline Lee to Charles and Mary C. Lee. She had a sister Mary P. Lee. In an article detailing the memorial put on in honor of William Henry Seward in 1873, "Misses Mary and Emma Lee" were listed as having helped trim the canopy. This was before Emma married Arthur Swartout; likely, she and her sister were the young women mentioned. Lazette Miller Worden enclosed the newspaper clipping in her June 2, 1873 letter to Augustus Henry Seward.
