Biography

Fortunatus Cosby, Jr. was the son of a lawyer and a lawyer himself. He was originally from Kentucky and ultimately made his home there, though he spent time abroad as the U. S. Consul in Geneva, Switzerland, appointed 1861. He remained in Switzerland until the end of the Civil War. It is for this role that he is referenced in Francis Canfield's December 18, 1865 letter to William Henry Seward. Cosby married Ellen May Jane Blake first, and had seven children with her. After her death in 1848, he married Anna T. Mills in 1854. He was an avid writer, loved literature, and helped found an abolitionist newspaper in Louisville, the "Louisville Examiner."
