Biography

Appleton Oaksmith was the son of Seba Smith and Elizabeth Oaks Smith, both writers. He was arrested in 1861 for attempting to outfit a slave ship, but escaped from jail and fled to England to avoid his charges. He later returned to the United States after being pardoned.
