Jacob Alexander Appley was the owner of The Augusta, a ship that he and Appleton Oaksmith were arrested for trying to outfit as a slave ship in 1861. According to a New York Times article about the incident, Appley purchased the ship on June 1 1861, and was seized on June 23, 1861.
