Algernon S. Chase was a dry goods merchant in Baltimore and New York and a personal friend of actress Charlotte Cushman. Frances "Fanny" Seward references Miss Cushman staying with Mr. Chase during a trip to Baltimore in the 1860s in one of her diary fragments from that time.
