Biography

Julius Hawley Seelye was born in Bethel, Connecticut and graduated from Amherst College in 1849. In 1852, Seelye graduated from Auburn Theological Seminary.  He served in the 44th U.S. Congress and then as President of Amherst College from 1877-1890. In 1872, he traveled with Abijah Fitch and Dr. Edward Hitchcock on a trip around the world. This trip is referenced in a letter written by Lazette Miller Worden to Augustus Henry Seward, date July 29, 1872.  
Seelye died on May 12, 1895.
