Biography
David Trotter Patterson was born in Cedar Creek, Tennessee. He studied law and entered Tennessee politics where he served first as a circuit court judge and later as a U.S. Senator. His election to the Senate in 1866 coincided with questions over the efficacy of loyalty oaths for politicians from former Confederate states.
