Biography

William Brickly Stokes was born in Chatham County, North Carolina, to Sylvanus and Mary Christian Stokes. Upon his relocation to Tennessee, Stokes pursued agricultural interests. In 1858, Stokes was elected to the U.S. House under the Know Nothing Party. Stokes supported preservation of the Union and during the Civil War served in the Union army. On the close of the war, Stokes served in the U.S. House of Representatives for Tennessee from 1866 to 1871.
